Here at Lake Pine Animal Hospital, we provide a wide range of dental services for dogs and cats in our Apex, NC office. Having regular dental check-ups helps maintain oral health so your pet is comfortable, healthy, and able to eat properly.
Potential Oral Health Problems
Dogs and cats can suffer from the same dental problems as humans. It all begins with plaque build-up that lead to tooth decay and, if left unchecked, to periodontal disease (otherwise known as gum disease). It’s important that your pet has regular dental check-ups to help prevent any dental problems from starting. Here a list of common dental problems seen in dogs and cats:
- Plaque build-up (brownish deposits on the teeth)
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)
- Tooth and gum pain
- Retained baby teeth
How Often Should I Have My Pet’s Teeth Checked?
We recommend that most pets have a dental check-up at least once a year. Some smaller breeds or those pets with a history of dental disease may be more prone to dental disease and require more frequent evaluations. Our vets will assess your pet’s unique needs and provide a comprehensive dental treatment plan to help optimize their dental health.
Dental Services We Provide
- Dental Examinations while awake
- Comprehensive Oral Assessment Under Anesthesia
- Ultrasonic Dental Cleaning and Polishing
- Tooth Extraction
- Minor Oral Surgery/ Mass removal
With all of our dental exams, we provide the option for dental x-rays. Just like at your dentist, these x-rays provide vital information on the health of your pet’s teeth. The x-ray results are used by our vets to evaluate bone density, reveal abscesses, and identify any teeth the may be causing problems or pain for your pet and need to be extracted with oral surgery.
If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s health or if you think your pet may need a dental exam, please give us a call at 919-380-1157.
